Riserva Naturale Regionale Punta Aderci
La Riserva Naturale Regionale di Punta Aderci tutela il tratto di costa naturalisticamente più bello e
interessante d’Abruzzo: un susseguirsi di spiagge di sabbia e ciottoli, di alte falesie e scogliere, di
paesaggi agricoli e macchia mediterranea, di tonalità verdi e blu di un tratto dell’Adriatico da cui è facile
lasciarsi stupire.
La Riserva si estende dalla spiaggia di Punta Penna, attigua al Porto di Vasto, alla foce del fiume Sinello. Il
promontorio di Punta Aderci caratterizza l'intera area abbracciando il parco e i sottostanti fondali marini,
offrendo una visuale a 360° su tutta la Riserva, a cui fa da sfondo, la sera, il rosso del tramonto che
disegna i profili delle montagne dei tre parchi nazionali: la Majella, il Gran Sasso-Laga e i Monti Sibillini.
Il paesaggio è piuttosto articolato con tratti pianeggianti tagliati da falesie in prossimità della linea di
costa, pendii che scendono al mare, sistemi dunali, zone umide come il “laghetto” di Mottagrossa e la
piana alluvionale del Sinello. Lungo le spiagge sabbiose o rocciose che siano, crescono comunità di piante
resistenti al salmastro, al calore e al vento secondo una sequenza che, dalla battigia verso l’interno, vede
insediarsi prima piante pioniere –come il ravastrello- poi specie della duna mobile –come la gramigna delle
spiagge- e infine quelle della duna fissa fino alla comparsa delle piante arbustive e della macchia
mediterranea. Fra i cordoni dunali, l’acqua, grazie anche alla presenza di argille, ristagna favorendo lo
stabilirsi di fasce di canneto.
Le dune e l’ambiente fluviale si prestano bene all’osservazione naturalistica e al birdwatching. Qui
svernano e sostano molte specie di uccelli come aironi, svassi, sterne, cormorani, il falco di palude e il
fratino che campeggia non a caso nel logo della riserva. All’interno, verso i pianori coltivati, troviamo la
cappellaccia, l’averla capirossa, il luì piccolo e rapaci come l’albanella minore, il gheppio e la poiana.
Punta Aderci è una Riserva da scoprire al passo lento dei nostri piedi, in mountain-bike sul vecchio
tracciato ferroviario, in canoa o semplicemente godendo della tranquillità delle spiagge di sassi dei
Libertini e della spiaggetta di Punta Aderci, dove a largo sono facilmente avvistabili i delfini del genere
Stenella, e in alcune cavità è possibile ammirare l’Halymenia floresia, considerata l’alga rossa più bella
del Mediterraneo.

Punta Aderci Regional Nature Reserve
Punta Aderci Regional Nature Reserve safeguards one of the most beautiful and interesting coasts in
Abruzzo: a succession of sandy beaches and shingles, high reefs and cliffs, of farm landscapes and maquis
shrubland, with the blue and green shades of a very enchanting stretch of the Adriatic coast.
The reserve stretches out on the seaside of Punta Penna, adjacent to the Port of Vasto, at the mouth of
the Sinello River. Punta Aderci is the main feature characterizing the entire area, embracing the park
and the sea beds below, offering an all-around view of the entire Reserve, where fiery sunsets often
highlight the mountain profiles of the three national parks: the la Majella, the Gran Sasso-Laga and the
Monti Sibillini.
The scenery is quite extensive with tracts of plains cut by cliffs a sheer drop into the seashore, slopes
descending to the sea, dune systems, humid areas such as the Mottagrossa pool and the alluvial plain the
Sinello River. Along the sandy or rocky beaches, groups of plants resistant to brackish water, heat or
wind grow accordingly, and from the water’s edge to the interior areas pioneering plants take root first-
such as the Maritime Cakile followed by species of the mobile dunes like the Bermuda grass of the
beaches and finally those of the fixed dunes, up to the appearance of shrubs and the maquis shrubland.
Among the dune barriers, the water stagnates also thanks to the presence of clays, thus favoring the
growth of strips of cane.
The dunes and the river environment are ideal for naturalistic observation and birdwatching. Here many
species of birds pass the winter, such as Herons, Grebes, Sternas, great Cormorants, the western Marsh
Harrier and the Kentish plover. Not surprisingly, the Kentish plover is depicted in the logo of the reserve.
Internally, towards the cropped plains, we can find the Crested Lark, the Woodchat shrike, the Chiffchaff
and prey birds such as the Montagu’s harrier, the common Kestrel and the common Buzzard.
Punta Aderci is a reserve to be discovered with ease, on foot or on a mountain-bike tracing the old
railway track, in a canoe or simply enjoying the calm of the pebbled beaches of Libertini or on the small
beach of Punta Aderci, where in the distance Stenella dolphins can be observed, and in some caves one

may admire the l’Halymenia floresia, considered the most beautiful red seaweed of the Mediterranean.
